Task 4- Final Evaluation

My work has taken its time to do but in all I am pleased with the video.

Before I began the filming it was the pre- production.
In which I was preparing all the paper work for the time I would be filming.
This is an extremely important process especially when you have to fill out health and safety hazard forms. This was the most important information needed. I didn’t have actors in my video so it was not as bad as some of the others would have had. The only problem that could have occurred would be members of the public getting in the way.

When I began the filming I did it in two different locations.
My first location was in the countryside which was at times difficult because of weather conditions. But I feel the filming its self was very good and I enjoyed creating shots. For one particular scene, the first a view of the countryside on a hill was the most difficult it took 5-6 takes until I felt I had got a good shot. Judging and wanting to change from the start I feel is a good thing. Because you can not tell if it could have been better and if there was anything you could have added?
My second location was in Crawley town which at first was a bit of a problem. Because I wanted to film lots of cars and noise of traffic but where I was filming nothing was happening so I had to change location. This wasn’t hard because not far there was a set of traffic lights with lots of traffic coming by. So I managed to set up there and I got my favourite takes in a few shots. This I was happy with.

When it came to the editing process at first I thought it was difficult.
Once I had imported my video to I- Movie it became slightly difficult.
I became annoyed with how basic my work was and didn’t know what to add to it?
Once I became more happy with the tools you can use on the file it became easier. I started to add in titles over the work. Also at times during the work you will notice I have used faders when going from one scene to another and when it finishes I fade it out. At the end I was happy with the editing. When I created my DVD Menu it was simple add I liked it. Transferring it from the computer to DVD went well and was ready for showing.

My exhibition had some issues. It was shown on a portable DVD Player in the memorial gardens in Crawley. But due to it being a very cold day it had its difficulties. The table I showed it one was frozen so I had to place the DVD Player on a folder. The viewers were watching it standing and done so two at a time. Then they filled out the questionnaires.
In the end I was slightly disappointed with the exhibition and it could have gone a lot better.

In final words the work was a good start to my first real project. I hope my viewers felt it was experimental?

2.3 The production and post production Diary

The Filming
The production during my filming time was simple.
I found it basic as I only had two locations during this video.
My first was in the countryside which was at times more difficult than my second location but this was due to weather.
I did find it hard using the zooming at times because when the tripod was not steady some problems did occur but nothing that major.
In my second location in Crawley town. I had no worries with the actual camera work whilst filming because it wasn’t busy. But I had to change location because I needed to see a lot of cars and traffic this was easy as I didn’t have to travel too far.
In all the production during filming went very well.

The Editing
The editing began slowly and worked its way up.
At first I found it difficult at times.
The uploading process was fine ad importing to the i-movie file.
But when it actually came to editing my work together there was some stress in to finding out what was the correct tools I wanted to use.
Obviously for my piece I didn’t need to upload a soundtrack so that made things easier.
It became easier when I realised what I could do with the video to change things. Which I went in to mix the sounds into other scenes. For example I had the sound of cars in the countryside and silence with a dogs lead edited into the town.
The editing was a fun and enjoyable process.

Task 2.2 Exibition plan

These are the questions that will be asked to the viewers of my experimental video:
The first 4 questions are simple yes or no answers. The 5th is to give their own personal views on the work.
1. Did you notice the change in sounds?
2. Is the length of the movie to your satisfaction?
3. Is their a part of the movie you didn't enjoy?
4. Did the movie change your views on noise?
5. In as much detail as you would like please give your views on my experimental video?

Task 2.2 Exhibition plan

My exhibition will be viewed to the public in Crawley town.
It goes well with my video because it is based on noises and Crawley generally a noisy place.
It will be in the morning. I will be showing it on a laptop/Portable DVD Player.
With a small group of people that would be interested in watching it.
The exact time will be on Wednesday 10th December between 9am-10.30am in the memorial gardens of Crawley Town.

Briefly give an overview of the types visual images used in this chosen piece. (B&W, colour, locations, actors etc.)The visual images in my video will show different shots from in busy places to not so busy places. It will partly be in the country side and some of it in the town. I may not need actors in my piece as the premise of it is just the noise that we have around us.

Briefly give an overview of the types audio used in the video. (Is the Audio Diegetic or Non Diegetic, does the soundtrack fit the imagery?)I mite be using a soundtrack in the video. It is not decided yet. But it will not be a major part of the work.

What do you think the premise or controlling idea of this video is?The premise of the video is to show the noises that are in the world today. The noises in a big town/city with all the pollution. Then the flip side of it is to see if the countryside is any different to noise in a busy town. The whole premise is just to look at how the world we live in, no matter where you are we will still have noise around us.

Koyaanisqatsi had the same reaction from most people it showed that how a movie can have a massive budget without any actors. It like me may have inspired many in the class to use in their own work. The Girl Chewing Gum was confusing for a lot of the class in the way it began and ended up in the end. This i know has inspired a few people in the group. With Girsele Keronze this created the biggest reaction within the class because for some it was creepy and some it was a laugh. But in all it does matter what the audience interpretation is because if know one had any views on the videos it would not create any interest in making their own pieces of work. These videos including others are important because it helps you to see different artist’s views on what they are looking at and will show the audience what the project is about.

5

The videos i have viewed are going to help with my own work. Because before now i didn't really have an opinion on experimental videos.Koyaanisqatsi in particular is helping me think about what my piece can be about. Obviously i will not have a budget like it but i would like to try something similar in its style.

After visiting the Tate Modern Art Gallery i have a better view on how you can show your work in a different kind of space. The most stand out piece of work i saw in there was the first thing that i saw. As you walk into this massive room you can see a viewing of space. The work is of Dominique Gonzalez the first thing you see inside the massive room is a gigantic spider it creates a good feel of space as you get different styles the spider and a dinosaur takes a heck of a lot of room in the space. Also the bunk beds placed all around the room makes you feel crammed in and has a different feel to the major works.

The videos we watched all have a narrative structure, some we saw are more obvious than other ones, 1001 nights this one has no traditional structure, there are just five short stories told by women, the film doesn’t have a begging, middle, and end so it does not matter what order it goes in the meaning does will not change the coordination.

Koyaanisqatsi at the beginning has cave drawings with calm music, we see an arial view of the planet, so it must have been taken from a helicopter. The middle of the film shows everyone at work, but the creator has fast forward this part to make it look like, the world is rushing around, then in the film there’s this slow explosion which is supposed to be a conclusion of how this world will end, then slowly goes back to the caves, to end the film. This particular film will come into the consideration of concept.

Telling lies beginning starts as he pick the phone up, the middle is all the swearing in the conversations, they change tones of there voices throughout the story, which was about what happened last night, the ending you have a phone call from his mum shouting at him down the phone. every audience will understand this film as it has a traditional narrative.

The technologies used in these movies are mostly different in each one. If you look at the girl chewing gum and Koyaanisqatsi these could not be more different. Koyannisqatsi had a massive budget in the late 80s where they were able to use the very best in technology they could use.

In the 1970s John Smith's piece was very much used without much technology at all. He just had a basic camera and went straight to work on what he wanted to do.

Girsele Keronze on the other hand had some brilliant special effects and Jan Kaunen could use C.G.I. in his work with work being sped up. Where as the other works were focussed on everything this had close- up shots on characters.

These works all link in together, although they were created in different decades they all link in with very similar ideas.

1

The 3 videos i have chosen to look at are Koyaanisqatsi directed by the famous Godfery Reggio. The second one is The Girl Chewing Gum directed by John Smith. The other movie is an extremely strange piece by Jan Kaunen called Girsele Keronze.
These movies relate to one another even though they are directed in completely different years. They all begin by making you the viewer try to work out what is going on in the movie. As each piece moves on you realise what is happening.

In Koyaanisqatsi it shows many different experimental art works when it was created in 1986 with the complete idea behind the movie is to show you what it is like in the world we live in with no plot.

When you look at the girl chewing gum it shows you although it did not have a huge budget it creates an interesting style of work with the use of close-up angles making the work more interesting to view. The premise of the work is to show you that although it appears something is going on it is just everyday life. The voiceover creates an effect.

Girsele Keronze was an odd piece but it does use great amounts of colour the sound effects added in are not realistic but it makes the video a comedy piece of work. The main premise is showing a broomstick race between two strange looking witches to drive the audience into a comedy video.

Tuesday 7 October 2008

Girsele Kerozene

Jan Kaunen created this strange movie which runs for approximatley 5 minutes.
It is based around a race between two witches one is trying to catch the other for doing something wrong its movement is very fast which deffintley shows that it is a craft direction alot of good special effects in this movie and creates an effect in the way that everything is speeded up.
The noises that were added in were very different with the engine going whilst on broomsticks adds comedy to the movie.
In all it is a very entetaining creation by Jan.
The colour does also add somthing to make it look more modern and at some points graphic.

The Girl Chewing Gum

This is a very old fasioned piece created in 1976 directed by John Smith it is 9 minutes long.
The entire movie is in black and white and it plays with your mind in making you think that John is directing people on the street. He is actually filming fom a distance and it is just people walking the streets. There are lots of different activities taking place. The main difference is that it appears a burgular alarm is going in the town but it is also going off in a field so it has been added which makes this piece non-diagetic. There is a lot of concept to this film and is researching lots of different ideas.

Koyaanisqatsi (Life Out Of Balance)

This full length movie is 80minutes created by Godefry Reggio with a massive budget.
The movie was created in 1982 and the music was done by Phillip Glass.
The images in this piece show the world we live in. But when it shows fire it plays with your mind as to what this is. Howether shortly after it lets you know that it is a rocket done in close-up shots which later explodes. Different kinds of music are used for each scene as the scenes get faster the music dramatically changes.
The Koyaanisqatsi experience is very much non-diagetic.
With no people talking in the whole of the movie creates something completely different to what we are all used to.
It is really about the world we live in and what can go wrong.

Task A

1001 Nights is another experimental movie we watched. It was directed by Joanne Al - Ani the piece lasts for approximatley 6 minutes.
The video begins with a black background and 5 women spread out with their eyes closed.
One by one the lady's eyes would open and they would express their feelings on war or maybe their own personal experiences. The point is there is no right or wrong in this piece.
The general premise of this piece is about war and what you can picture of it.
It really adds somthing special because it does not have soundtrack which suites it.
It is a context video trying to show you many points of view on war.

Telling Lies

Telling Lies is a experimental video created by Simon Ellis its running time is 4 minutes.
This is one extraordinary piece of work which looks at the aftermath of the night before.
The piece is very much a craft creation with fantastic use of digital audio the piece is a mixture of diegetic and non diegetic deffintley with its audio masterpiece works.
As you hear the phone conversation taking place every word from the conversation appears on the screen it creates an image as though you are part of the conversation.
If any foul language is said they may occasionaly change the text to make it look explicit.
When the phone rings you know straight away that someone is about to recieve a phone call and it has been edited in to add the sound of a phone ringing.
The premise of this piece is to show the emotions one lad has gone through the night before were he supposably cheated on his girlfriend. The conversation goes round to so many different people and creates an argument not just one to one but the guys mother gets involved and some of his friends. But it doesn't end up well for the lad as his girlfriend gives up on him and the lady doesn't want him either.
